Tips for Preserving Your Family Heirlooms

Collections - Preservation

Artefacts and archival materials are a vital aspect of our society because they are pieces of history that can tell a story and place events in context. As such, it is crucial to preserve these heirlooms in order that future generations may learn from and interact with these pieces of the past.

At Grey Roots, preservation is an integral part of our mandate and a primary function that occurs behind-the-scenes. Our storage rooms and exhibit areas are environmentally controlled and maintained at levels set forth by international conservation standards. Each storage room is equipped with modern, compact shelving and individual artefacts and archival items are stored in acid-free, chemically inert material and in a manner that best supports the specific requirements of the item.

In addition, Grey Roots has a conservation lab equipped with a fume hood and associated tools of the trade. It is here that staff clean, stabilize, and repair the artefacts and archival materials, which form our collection.
