Open Hearts - Closed Doors

Open Hearts - Closed Doors tells the story of the arrival, on Canadian soil between 1947-1949, of 1,123 Jewish children orphaned by the Holocaust. The exhibit, produced by the VHEC, chronicles the lives of these children as they emerged from the Holocaust. They made their way through Displaced Persons Camps and orphanages, eventually to communities across Canada. Open Hearts - Closed Doors also tells the story of the efforts of Canadian Jewish Congress and other community agencies to bring these children to Canada. Local Jewish communities, agencies and social workers that assisted them upon their arrival. Personal narratives by the war orphans form a substantial part of this exhibit.

There is also a virtual exhibitions available for viewing through the Virtual Museum of Canada. This interact site includes stories from eight orphans told through artefacts, as well as audio and video comments. Also included on the site is a Teacher's Guide and many other learning resources.

This exhibition was on display at Grey Roots from October 18, 2006 to December 17, 2006.
