Clarksburg WIF31

ClarksburgThe Clarksburg Women’s Institute was organized in 1910 and served the Township of Collingwood and the communities of Clarksburg and Thornbury, Ontario until 1977.  Throughout their years of service, the members of the Clarksburg Women’s Institute raised funds through tea parties, chicken suppers, concerts, and dances.  The funds raised at these events were used in donations to the Sick Children’s Hospital, Red Cross, Collingwood Hospital, and other local charities.  During both World Wars their efforts produced innumerable boxes of goods and comforts for soldiers overseas, as well food, milk, and other comforts for civilians affected by the wars.  In 1926, their membership was split as a new branch had formed in nearby Thornbury.  Despite this split, the ladies of Clarksburg were able to continue their good work together until declining membership caused the group to disband in 1977.
