Histor!ca Fair

Histor!ca Fairs

Histor!ca Fairs are a grand celebration of Canada's heritage, in the form of student history projects. Students research Canadian heroes, legends, milestones, and achievements - and proudly present their stories at a public exhibition. The Fairs are similar to a science fair, but participants also have an opportunity to attend interactive workshops and presentations.

Grey Roots is holding its third Regional Histor!ca Fair on April 30, 2009. This page is our 2008 details - updates to 2009 TBA.

Why your Class should participate
Any time students create a history project and show it off by presenting it to their classmates or to their school, students are giving our past a future. Students get to share their Social Studies work with their peers. The Grey Roots Regional Historica Fair will give students an opportunity to share their work with the community and celebrate our heritage.

Classes that participate in the Grey Roots Regional Historica Fair will not take time away from meeting all of the curriculum expectations that they must fulfill. It compliments the Ontario curriculum and is easily integrated into their Social Studies or language classes. To see how participating in a Historica Fair can assist classes in meeting their curriculum expectations please visit the Ontario Historica website.

Participating schools will have the opportunity to send 4 students from each grade, 4 through 9, to represent their school.

What happens at a Regional Fair
At the Regional Fair judges visit each student to hear them present their project and evaluate their work. The judges will then decide who will receive the regional awards and who will represent our area at the Provincial and National Histor!ca Fairs. Every student who participates at the regional level gets to participate in exciting workshops and watch interesting performances.

The Provincial Histor!ca Fair
Three participants from the Grey Roots Histor!ca Fair will be given the opportunity to participate in the Provincial Fair which again takes place in Ottawa in 2008 from June 11th - 15th. The Provincial Histor!ca Fair includes visits to local heritage sites, opportunities to meet students from all across Ontario, as well as an opportunity for students to show off their heritage project. This is an exciting honour for those students who are chosen to go because their entire experience is paid for by Histor!ca and the generous donations of sponsors!

The National Histor!ca Fair
One Grey Roots representative will be sent to the National Histor!ca Fair being held in Victoria, B.C. from July 7th - 14th. In 2007 the National Fair was held in Lethbridge, Alberta. This is an amazing opportunity to learn more about the local history of a region of Canada while meeting other students from all across Canada. All of the costs will be paid for by Histor!ca including flight, meals, accommodations, and activities.

For more information please check out the two Histor!ca Fair websites - www.histori.ca and www.ohhfa.ca, or download a sample unit plan (2,019 pdf).
