From Slavery to Freedom

African Canadians in Grey County

Offered From February 4 to May 2, 2008

Programs - Black History

Grades 1 through 6
Using their imagination, students will take a trip back in time to experience what life as a slave was like. They will board a slave ship to sail across the ocean to a new land where they will be forced into slavery. After learning about the conditions these slaves worked in, the students will make an escape to freedom in Canada. During their journey they will explore symbolism used on the Underground Railroad and create their own symbol as a souvenir of their visit.

Grade 7 and up…
Come learn about the lives of early African Canadian settlers to this region. This program provides the opportunity to celebrate the lives and contributions made by African Canadians and their descendants. Despite the burdens of racism and prejudice, these Canadian citizens have played an important role in the development of our country, from the first early settlements to the busy cities, towns, and villages of today. After a short introduction, students will break into small groups and act as reporters for local newspapers. Students will investigate key issues regarding the black community and prepare a presentation of their findings.
