Pioneer Days

Stories & Play from Days Past

Offered from April 16 to June 25, 2008

Pioneer DaysStudents will learn first hand what early settlers needed to do in order to survive and thrive in this new land. Listen to the stories of a recent immigrant to Canada as she talks about her journey to Canada from Ireland. What was Grey County like at this time? Learn what newcomers would have had to do to clear the bush and build their own home.

Students are encouraged to dress in costume for their visit to Grey Roots. Orientation is provided in the museum and then groups are led into Moreston Historic Village to visit the Log Buildings: the Log Cabin, the Log House and the Blacksmith Shop. Why was the hearth the heart of the pioneer home? What was a typical day in the life of a settler? Pioneer children had a lot of responsibilities and chores - students will experience first hand some of these duties. Smell the coal fire in the blacksmith shop; hear the sizzle of metal as it plunges into a water bath to cool.

Weather permitting children will participate in period games outdoors. Games such as Rolling Hoops; Game of Graces; Rattlesnake Game and Tippit will be played.
This program appeals primarily to elementary students, fulfilling specific curriculum expectations for Grades 2, 3 and 7. This is a very popular program, please book early to avoid disappointment.
