Hopes for Freedom: Black History in Canada

Meets the Ontario Curriculum for Grades 2, 3, 7, 8, 11 & 12.

This program will give students a clearer understanding of the early role Canada played in the enslavement of Black people and how the introduction of the British Emancipation Act changed Canada into a place of hope and freedom for escaping fugitives.

Grades 2 & 3 will hear the story Henry's Freedom Box and get a chance to go inside a box like the one featured in the story.

Older Grades will learn about the life newly freed slaves made for themselves in Canada, play the Hopes for Freedom board game, and view the film, Voice of the Fugitive.
